Information on Dilek Peninsula-Büyük Menderes Delta National Park
History
Dilek Peninsula-Büyük Menderes Delta National Park was declared a protected area on May 19, 1966, due to its ecological and archaeological importance, covering a total area of 27,598 ha or 275.98 km². Over the centuries, this region has witnessed the history of numerous civilizations, from the ancient Greeks to the Romans and Ottomans. Within its boundaries are significant archaeological remains, such as the ruins of Panionium, an ancient center of worship for the Ionian League.
For most of its history, the lands comprising the Dilek Peninsula and the Büyük Menderes River delta remained uninhabited or sparsely populated, allowing the area to stay virtually untouched by human activity. As a result of this isolation, the park is home to a great diversity of plants and wildlife, many of which are still present today.
With the rise of Greek civilization, particularly under the influence of the Ionians, several settlements were founded near Mount Mykale and the Büyük Menderes delta, such as the ancient cities of Priene and Miletus. Panionium, located within the park’s boundaries, was established as the meeting place of the Ionian League.
In modern times, despite population growth in nearby areas like the port city of Kuşadası, it wasn’t until May 19, 1966, that Turkey’s Ministry of Forests and Water Management declared the Dilek Peninsula a national park. Years later, in 1994, the Büyük Menderes River delta, which extends south of the peninsula, was also incorporated into the park, raising its status to a national protected area due to its environmental significance.
Location
The park is located in Aydın Province, on Turkey’s western coast, between the cities of Kuşadası and Söke. The Menderes River delta, a vast wetland area, and the Dilek Peninsula, characterized by mountains and cliffs, form the entirety of the park. This coastal location makes it an ideal destination for both beach lovers and those who prefer mountains.
