La Güira National Park

History

The La Güira National Park has a rich and diverse history, from its early indigenous inhabitants to its significant role in the Cuban Revolution. Become part of this narrative by exploring its past. It was established as a national park in the year 1987 to protect its exceptional biodiversity and its historical and cultural value, covering an area of 218.53 km2.

It is situated on lands that formerly belonged to José Manuel Cortina, a wealthy landowner and politician who was involved in the trade of precious woods. However, in 1959, due to the Cuban Revolution, Cortina had to go into exile, and his properties were confiscated. Currently, his mansion and gardens are in a state of ruins.

During the 1962 missile crisis, the revolutionary Ernesto "Che" Guevara established his residence in the area known as Cuevas de los Portales. This historic site was used as a refuge by Che during that period of tension.
