History
Sevan National Park was established in 1978 to protect the natural environment of Lake Sevan, which is a vital resource for the country. Throughout the centuries, this lake has been a center of life and culture in Armenia, and its protected area covers both its biodiversity and important archaeological and historical sites, comprising a protected area of 342 km² (132 square miles).
Location
Located in the Gegharkunik province, in northeastern Armenia, the designated area for Sevan surrounds the namesake lake, about 1900 meters above sea level. Its proximity to Yerevan makes it an accessible destination, just an hour and a half drive from the capital. The park spans over 1500 km², including mountainous and coastal areas.

How to get to Sevan National Park
From Yerevan
It is located about 65 km northeast of Yerevan. It can be easily reached by car, taxi, or public transport, with buses regularly departing from Yerevan’s central station.
From Dilijan
The charming town of Dilijan is a relatively short distance from Lake Sevan, and the park can be accessed in just over 30 minutes by car. It is an excellent stop on a tourist route through the region.

Geography of Sevan (Gegharkunik)
The park is centered around Lake Sevan, which covers approximately 940 km². Its altitude and location in the Caucasus mountains make it a unique habitat for numerous species of flora and fauna. Flora of Sevan
The Sevan lake basin is a meeting point between mesophilic and xerophilic flora zones of the Armenian-Iranian region, giving it great plant diversity. Within Sevan National Park, 1145 species of vascular plants have been recorded, while the protection zone is home to about 1587 species. The park’s flora includes 28 tree species, 42 shrub species, 866 perennial herb species, and 307 annual and biennial plant species, offering a wide variety of landscapes throughout the year.
The park is home to 23 species of plants endemic to Armenia, 13 of which are exclusive to the Sevan floristic zone. Three species endemic to Armenia and five to the Sevan basin can be found within the park itself. These species not only enhance the surroundings but are also fundamental to local ecosystems. Additionally, 17 plant species in the park are listed in the Armenian Red Book, highlighting the importance of their conservation.
Many of these plants also have medicinal and nutritional value. Around 60 medicinal herbs and more than 100 edible species are found in the park and its protection zone, reflecting the interconnectedness of biodiversity and local life. In spring, the park blooms with wildflowers, transforming the landscape into an unparalleled visual spectacle.
Fauna of Sevan
Lake Sevan is known for its rich biodiversity, being home to the famous endemic trout, known as "ishkhan," a species vital both ecologically and culturally to the region. The lake and its surroundings are also an essential refuge for a wide variety of waterfowl and migratory birds. Up to 267 bird species have been recorded in the Sevan basin, making it a prime destination for birdwatching. These species belong to orders such as Podicipediformes, Pelecaniformes, Phoenicopteriformes, and Falconiformes, among others. Additionally, 56 species are listed in the Armenian Red Book of Animals, underlining the park’s importance for biodiversity conservation.
Among the most notable species are the Armenian gull (Larus armenicus) and the mountain chiffchaff (Phylloscopus sindianus), both endemic to the region. Although the avian fauna suffered a decline after water levels dropped and the Gilli marshes dried up, a gradual return of several species has been observed since 2007. This recovery has accelerated with the strengthening of protection measures implemented since 2013, favoring the ecosystem’s restoration.
As for mammals, the park is home to a diverse range of species, including foxes, wolves, jackals, martens, and hares, as well as various species of small rodents. This combination of terrestrial and aquatic wildlife makes Sevan National Park a fascinating place for nature and conservation enthusiasts.
