Notable Fauna and Flora

The park’s flora includes numerous endemic species, while its fauna is remarkable for its diversity of birds, reptiles, and mammals. Caguanes National Park hosts over 200 species of animals and plants, with 24 of them being endemic. Notably, there are 112 species of nesting birds in the park, particularly in the coastal mangroves. The Tres Dolinas Cave is home to a large population of butterfly bats, known for being the world’s smallest bats. However, during the 1990s, a decrease in migratory bird presence, such as pelicans and flamingos, was observed. Thanks to the closure of three sugar mills, pollution in the swamps and bay has decreased, and an increase in their numbers has been observed since 2007.
