Isla de Cabras National Park

Location and General Information

Isla de Cabras is a small islet located at the entrance of San Juan Bay, north of Puerto Rico. The park offers unique views of the historic district of San Juan and the impressive El Morro fortress. Access to the park can be gained through Palo Seco in Toa Baja.

History of Isla de Cabras

Since the 17th century, Isla de Cabras has held strategic importance. Home to the San Juan de la Cruz Fort, known as El Cañuelo, this park invites you to immerse yourself in the rich colonial history of Puerto Rico.

The history of Isla de Cabras has an intriguing past, being used as a military fortress due to its strategic location. It served as a refuge for people suffering from leprosy, as it could only be accessed by boat, effectively isolating them.

Today, from El Morro, you can observe the ruins of the former leper colony, where those affected by leprosy were situated during that era. The island’s location allowed for isolating the sick and protecting the rest of the population, as the nearest community was quite distant from the island.

Given that there was no cure for this severe disease at the time, isolating leprosy patients completely was the best option. Consequently, affected individuals were often permanently separated from society, aiming to contain its spread. It’s worth noting that the island’s living conditions and climate were unsuitable for this disease. However, this isolation mechanism was implemented to prevent the ongoing spread of the disease. Over the years, other measures were adopted to manage it until complete eradication was achieved.
